In English, the "Verb-Preposition" combination with directional meaning ("V-P[+DIR]"combination) allows its prepositional object to be delected so long as it is understood from the context or from gen...eral socio-cultural knowledge, and thus alternates with the “Verb-Particle[+DIR]” combination. Based on the statistical findings of recent personal research, however, the “V-P[+DIR]” combination is less likely to occur with pronominal objects. This tendency is also seen with the sub-category of prepositions with deletable objects. The present study gives a pragmatic account of these facts from two different perspectives, one of which focuses on the different aspects of the alternative forms, in contrast to the three previous studies cited hire.続きを見る
