| Abstract |
Although the improvement of environmental barriers has been promoted, prejudice and discrimination towards individuals with physical disabilities still exist in Japan. To create an inclusive society, ...such attitudes towards individuals with physical disabilities must change. The main purpose of this study was to examine whether perceptions of para-athletes are related to attitudes about interacting with individuals with physical disabilities. Our secondary objective was to examine how perceptions of individuals with disabilities and perceptions of para-athletes differed in their relationships with attitudes. In total, 1,137 men, 1,250 women, and 7 others completed a web survey. Path analysis revealed that perceptions of individuals with physical disabilities correlated with sense of resistance about “Friendship” and “Self-assertion”. However, perceptions of para-athletes correlated with only sense of resistance about “Friendship”. These results implied that, because the positive perceptions of para-athletes were induced by a focus on their high-performance capabilities, the contribution of perceptions of them on attitudes towards individuals with physical disabilities is limited.show more
