Abstract Acculturation, especially in relation to Asian cultures, has become the focus of much recent research. In comparison, however, relatively little work has been carried out in Japan on the acculturation... of European societies. In Shakespeare's Tempest, we see a moment when Alonso's perception of European culture might change because of his encounter with a strange being, Caliban. This papaer will try to apply the theory of acculturation to Shakespeare's works, particularly to his Histories that have been considered to be unconnected with acculturation. To make a play reflects some kind of acculturation and challenges people's perception of culture. We can say that any masterpiece should challenge and change people's perception of culture. This approach may forge a connecton between the theory of acculturation and Shakespeare's works.show more
