Abstract	In English, the "Verb-Preposition" combination with directional meaning ("V-P[+DIR]"combination) allows its prepositional object to be delected so long as it is understood from the context or from gen...eral socio-cultural knowledge, and thus alternates with the “Verb-Particle[+DIR]” combination. Based on the statistical findings of recent personal research, however, the “V-P[+DIR]” combination is less likely to occur with pronominal objects. This tendency is also seen with the sub-category of prepositions with deletable objects. The present study gives a pragmatic account of these facts from two different perspectives, one of which focuses on the different aspects of the alternative forms, in contrast to the three previous studies cited hire.show more
