Abstract This paper examines the number of handclaps used in worship in the 9th and 10th centuries based on descriptions of clapping hands in Japanese ceremonial texts from these periods. In the legal ritual b...ooks of the ritsuryō system of the 9th and 10th centuries, such as Kōtai Jingū Gishikichō (皇太神宮儀式帳), Toyukegū Gishikichō (止由気宮儀式帳), Dairi Gishiki (内裏儀 式), Gishiki (儀式), Engishiki (延喜式), and Saikyūki (西宮記), the word “clapping” appears along with the number of claps. The descriptions of clapping in these texts have been mentioned in the literature related to kokugaku and Shintō. However, few studies have focused on the number of claps in these periods. This is because the number of claps in a “step” (dan 段), which is a division of the total number of claps, could be interpreted in various ways, and no explicit rule has been known. Therefore, this paper first proposes a descriptive method that allows for the widest interpretation of the number of claps in a step. Then, using this method, this paper examines the perceptions and tendencies of the number of claps and the relationship between that and the number of bows that appear in the ceremonial texts of these periods.show more
