Abstract The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate actual states of the use of illegal drugs and possible abuserelated factors among Japanese university students in 2014. Furthermore, the result...s were analyzed in comparison with the findings in 2012. As a result, 69 subjects with illegal drug abuse were selected out of 13993 screened (0.5%), and the number decreased compared to 114 subjects of the 2012 survey. Cannabis was used more frequently. The main purpose of using illegal drugs was out of interest. The use of illegal drugs was strongly associated with the presence of surrounding illegal drug users, the experience that received invitation to drug abuse, and tattoos in this study. Psychological factors, such as self-esteem and general health, were also related to illegal substance use. This study suggests a downward trend for the number of drug abuse from 2012 to 2014, and the effect of a drug abuse prevention program including psychological approaches toward university and secondary school students.show more
