Abstract On March 11, 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Japan. The earthquake caused 40-meter-high waves that swept over coastal towns. Amid much criticism, high school baseball tournaments occurred... five months later (the Summer Kōshien Competition). Some studies have demonstrated the meanings and possible division that exist between sports narratives and reality in the Japanese media after 3/11. While the media consist of many different modes of communication, online media is characterized as interactive. The purpose of the present study is to clarify the narrative structure of a sports blog. The present study examined how a sports blog created a narrative relationship with a disaster, using content analysis and comparing the narrative structure of online and newspaper contexts. The analysis reveals that the narrative structure of the Sportnavi plus blogs, which differs from that of the editorial accounts in the newspaper Asahi Shimbun, features no direct mention of the incidents in the immediate aftermath of the disaster.show more
