概要 This paper aims at abstracting purposes of adopting rhombic patterns used on house outer walls in China and other rhombic patterns used in countries adjacent to China, including Japan. As a result of ...the writer's field survey in China, Vietnam, Thailand, Nepal and fudia, the following matters are noted; 1) fu China, rhombic patterns have been used widely as house outer wall decoration not only in major cities like Shanghai, but in remote rural villages. Most of outer walls with rhombic patterns are of mortar, and very few of plaster or brick walls. Rhombic patterns are also on house doors and lattice, as well as on furture, deeply rooting among people's living culture as a good omen. 2) Also in Japan, it was a customary practice to decorate the front mortar wall with rhombic patterns, which is considered to have spread nationwide after the Taisho period (1912-26). This practice, however, has disappeared recentry, only inherited in some part of farming villages. 3) There is no customary practice of decorating house outer walls with rhombic patterns in fudia nor Thailand. Rhombic patterns on outer walls, however limited in number, are noted in Vietnam and Nepal. 4) Although rhombs as cloth patterns are widely used in East Asia, rhombic patterns on house outer walls are noted mostly in China. No specific religious backgrounds were noted as a result of interviews with local residents, other than a sence of rhombs as an good omen. This paper aims at abstracting purposes of adopting rhombic patterns used on house outer walls in China and other rhombic patterns used in countries adjacent to China, including Japan.
