概要 The purpose of this paper is to analyze the political meanings of Marlowe's Massacre at Paris, situating it in its historical and ideological contexts. The Elizabethan drama served as a central urban ...mass media, contributing much to the formation of political discourses in the society. The sharp increase in the number of published pamphlets about French matters in England suggests that the Elizabethan people's interest in the turbulent political situation of France grew more and more from 1585 to 1592, just before the first recorded performance of the play (1593). As England itself was seriously involved in the religious conflict, the French religious war exerted a lasting influence on the English political thought, especially on the ideology of kingship. The radical ideologies of More, Machiavelli, and Hotman, much fermented in the religious conflicts, form an essential part of Marlowe's play, which deconstructs the traditional idea of ruler in its satirical descriptions of holocaust and intolerance.続きを見る
