Abstract The purpose of the main discourse is to clarify the time when a four-legged "hokai" was made, investigating the material of the container called "hokai" which had been used since the Heian Period. Alm...ost all Japanese cylindrical wooden containers which were used popularly after early modem ages had four legs. On the contrary, Chinese cylindrical containers mainly had three legs since the ancient times. This means that four-legged Japanese containers had its own development. As a result of the comparison between the cylindrical wooden containers drawn in the pictures of the medieval and early modern ages and the model pictures by means of three dimension software, the following has become clear. Most of the "hokai" were influenced by "karahitsu" and ''hokai" probabry came into existence in the middle of the Heian Period. None of the pictures painted between the medieval ages and the early modern ages show us four-legged "hokai", except of one in the late Kamakura Period, which had the possibility of having four legs. It was not until in the middle of the 17th century, the time when Edo Bakuhan Taisei, Shogunate (Baku from Bakufu) and domain(han) system, was established that "hokai" began to have hour ]eggs.
