オーストリア・フォラールベルク州の優良企業 : 合成樹脂製容器、繊維、運輸の各部門に属する諸企業の事例

| 概要 | This paper is a sequel of Yamamoto (2019) and its purpose is to describe brief histories and the present situations of excellent companies in Vorarlberg, Austria: ALPLA Werke Alwin Lehner GmbH & Co KG... in Hard, Getzner Textil AG in Bludenz, and Gebrüder Weiss Gesellschaft m.b.H. in Lauterach. These companies belong to the corporate type of Mittelstand or family company, which is recognized as a source of advantage and resilience of German economy (Audretsch & Lehmann 2016; Ewing 2014). Simon (2012) points out that there are a number of the so-called “hidden champions” not only in Germany but also in Switzerland and Austria and that many of them are family companies. The present author visited the headquarters of the three companies in September 2017 und had interviews with one of the executive board members of each company. He uses the company’s history published by themselves respectively and various documents. And he also collected various information through internet, local newspaper and other publications. Based on these materials, he describes their development to excellent companies, which can continually realize some innovation of technology, marketing, service for their customers and so on. ALPLA was established in 1955 and has developed machines and tools for producing plastic packaging for various drinks, foodstuffs and articles for daily use such as cosmetics, skincare products, household care materials, engine oil, grease and so on, which are produced by well-known large corporations in the world, while it had supplied plastic packaging for the local companies during its start-up stage. Because its technological innovation has been recognized by well-known large manufacturing corporations, it produces those articles near or within the factories of its customers in order to reduce the transport cost and to meet the needs of its customers quickly. Machines and tools are, however, developed at the headquarters’ location, namely at Hard in Vorarlberg, where ALPLA can get motivated and skilled workers through the Vorarlberg’s dual system of vocational education. It tries to develop recycling system of plastic bottles and bio-based plastics for bottles, coating and fibers in collaboration with foreign companies. Getzner Textil AG was subsidiary of Getzner, Mutter & Cie GmbH & Co. KG, the predecessor of which was established in 1818 and had been one of the largest textile companies in Austria since the mid-19th century. Through the reorganization of Getzner, Mutter & Cie in 1980, Getzner Textil AG was established and gradually overcame the crisis of the textile industry in Vorarlberg. It has continually grown on the basis of offensive investment for new technology under the leadership of CEO of Getzner Textil AG, who had studied engineering at ETH in Zurich and is now CEO of the Getzner’s holding company. Main products of Getzner Textil AG are textile fabrics for renowned apparel makers, and uniform of famous airline companies and other big corporations. This company has been also successful for marketing of damask fabric in Nigeria and other countries in Africa. And it has gotten several awards for working conditions for its employees. Getzner Werkstoffe GmbH belongs to the Getzner’s group and this is very innovative in the polyurethane suppresses noise and vibration for transportation equipment. Gebrüder Weiss is surely one of the oldest and tradition-richest family companies not only in Austria, but also in Middle Europe. Under the Habsburg’s empire, it played an important role for the international transport of materials and goods of the Vorarlberg’s textile industry and had branch offices outside of Austria. It lost its assets in foreign countries because of the Habsburg’s defeat of World War I. However, under the leadership of Ferdinand Weiss between 1921 and 1968 and of his daughter and her husband between 1968 and 2004, Gebrüder Weiss could overcome several crises and can become one of the largest companies of logistics in Austria. It has developed its subsidiaries in Southeast European countries since the fall of the Iron Curtain, under the leadership not of its headquarters in Vorarlberg but of a manager at its branch office in Vienna. Gebrüder Weiss now plays the role as a key logistics corporation between Danube-Alpine countries and the global world. Its principle of the organization is subsidiarity, which means decentralization as far as possible and centralization as far as necessary, and cooperation with partner logistics corporations outside of Vorarlberg and even of Austria. We can find several aspects of nature of the excellent companies, which Peters and Waterman (1982), a classical work on excellent companies in the USA, point out. This is also the case for the largest four companies in Vorarlberg, with which Yamamoto (2019) deals. The present author finds the core of the excellence in the managing philosophy, namely endogenous commitment of employees with their respective company and the principle of subsidiarity for the organizational structure. Commitment and entrepreneurship of employees of the Vorarlberg’s family companies are outstanding, what may well be attributable to the apprentice training under the Vorarlberg’s dual system of vocational education, further education for the regular employees and high-level corporate ethics of each company, which includes environmental consciousness and family-friendly policy and so on.続きを見る |
