Abstract Celebration Overture for Kyushu University’s 100th Anniversary was composed in celebration of the Centennial Anniversary of Kyushu University in 2011. In the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthqua...ke, however, the actual ceremony was postponed in consideration of the calamity and took place in 2012 instead. It was first performed on 12th May 2012 during the ceremony at the Kyushu University Semicentennial Auditorium by the conductor, Aratani Shunji, leading Kyushu University Philharmonic Orchestra. The same performers then made its initial public performance at the Kyushu University Centennial Anniversary Concert held at ACROSS Fukuoka Symphony Hall on 26th May 2012. The work follows the example of Brahms' Academic Festival Overture, in which the composer featured popular student songs of the time here and there to successfully make it familiar to audience. Once looking into the details, however, one can notice the most exquisite composition technique on which Brahms formed the piece. My Celebration Overture for Kyushu University’s 100th Anniversary also incorporates melodies from Kyushu and Fukuoka regions, such as Kuroda-bushi and Dontaku-bayashi, as well as the university's student songs, team songs, and the Ito Campus image song. In order to avoid it becoming a mere medley of fragmented melodies, I have formed a musically coherent structure in which the melodies appear and develop. Also, in order to make the music suitable to the jubilant occasion, I added festive expressions in the music. It is filled with a brilliant, vibrant, and positive atmosphere, and the orchestration is arranged to sound brisk and powerful.show more
