Abstract |
Theoretical and empirical controversies on the relationships between self-multiplicity and psychological adjustment have continued since J. Block (1961). Empirical investigations, thereafter, have bee...n attempted, resulting in inconsistent and therefore inconclusive findings. This paper attempted (1) to overview their theoretical arguments and backgrounds and (2) to review empirical studies that supported each side of the two camps, as well as those with no support. Based upon the above analyses, we concluded that most of those empirical studies focused only on the differentiation of self and failed to take into consideration the organization factor, and, therefore, argued that including the organization factor into equations would solve the inconsistency problems more comprehensively. Finally, we discussed new directions and agenda for future research.show more
