Abstract | This paper analyzes the sequence of subjects used for logical development in newspaper editorials. Texts are cited from Asahi Shimbun, Yomiuri Shimbun and Nishi Nippon Shimbun. The editorials were div...ided into three parts: introduction, development and conclusion. As a result, two types of newspaper editorials are identified: (1) explanatory type and (2) claim type. Asahi Shimbun and Nishi Nippon Shimbun tend to use the explanatory type frequently. It is conceivable that an explanation type sequence is “a functional construction method that matches the order of human thinking, allowing logic to flow smoothly” (Morioka 1995: 193). On the other hand, Yomiuri Shimbun often states claims first, and later reasserts the conclusions. In the introduction of the editorials, topics are presented by using strategies such as “introducing current affairs,” “posing problems and tasks,” “stating assertions” and so on. The introductions take various forms. After the discussion in the development part of the editorials, the final part leads to conclusions or claims. In this part it is common to express opinions of writers or calls for action. In both the explanatory type and the claim type of subject sequences, the development part follows the pattern of “explanation → opinion → explanation → opinion → ... (A → B → A → B ...),” in order to advance the discussion. While presenting facts, the writers also state their views. It is possible that the writer entrusts the interpretation to the readers, and the readers ultimately assert the opinion themselves.show more |
