Evaluation of university cases underwent disciplinary action due to harassment

Abstract Workplace bullying, mobbing and/or harassment have gained considerable attention due to the adverse effects on mental and physical health, as well as work-related issues, such as absenteeism and prese...nteeism, in recent years. Also, social and sexual interaction among faculty and students cause serious problems in Japanese universities and other educational research institutes, especially for those who are in a weak position. Possible non-sexual harassment like this is sometimes called as “academic harassment” in Japan. The present study was conducted in an attempt to describe recent cases of harassment in Japanese universities according to the announcement made by universities or news media in Japan from 2005 to 2014, and to investigate possible factors relevant to the cases underwent disciplinary action due to harassment. A total of 247 cases with harassment were selected in this study. The laid-off cases were significantly higher in the subjects with sexual harassment or those belonging to the private university compared with their counterparts. We have to take various measures to improve the situation in consideration of these characteristics.show more
