Abstract The purpose of the present study were: (1) to construct the scale for cognition of false self-expression of 'the self' and 'friends'; (2) to examine the relationship between cognition of false self-ex...pression and stress responses. Questionnaire was completed by 496 junior high school pupils. Result of the factor analysis yielded two factors: (1) positive cognition, (2) negative cognition. Furthermore, results of the cluster analysis revealed four styles of cognition of false self-expression of 'the self' and 'friends': (1) weak positive type, (2) positive and negative type, (3) negative type, and (4) strong positive type. Results of the ANOVA suggested that pupils with the "a little positive type" had little stress responses. Many pupils belong to "weak positive type" had the most stress responses, and they tended to be maladjusted. Finally, pupils with the "negative type" had little stress responses, so they tended not to show false self-exprssion.show more
