Abstract |
The aim of this paper is to resolve the enigma embodied in the figure of Rousseau in Shelley's "Triumph of Life". Rousseau is understood to represent the poet's active, and creative self while the pro...tagonist represents the passive self. The dialogue between Rousseau and the protagonist is thus taken as a soliloquy with alternate voices. The testimonies at court do not judge the guilty, but unite two conflicting selves.show more
