Abstract This is a case study of an "Ibasho-Katsudo" ("group program in a free space") called "Psycho Retreat," which has been providing student counseling services in a university for over 30 yrs. Initially, ...the principles of "Psycho Retreat" were explained, and member characteristics, events, and the staff's role were described for each of the following terms: (1) the dawn of the program, (2) developing term, (3) swelling term, (4) changing term, and (5) present term. It was noted that change of staff affected the mood and activities of the group. The university setting also indirectly affected "Psycho Retreat" activities. The functions of "Psycho Retreat" are discussed along five dimensions: (1) the feeling of having one' own place, (2) facilitating collaborative activities, (3) assuming a role during membership, (4) broadening relations, and (5) cultivating a continuing relationship with others.show more
