概要 This study conducts a comparative literary analysis of the Indonesian folktale collection “The Flower of Kusumo”(1942) to elucidate how the ideology of the “Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere” dur...ing the Pacific War was being imparted to Japan’s young nationals (children). “The Flower of Kusumo,” an anthology published by children’s story writer Shogo Koide, comprises 20 stories selected from Indonesian legends and myths adapted from originals in English, German, and Japanese. These stories have been markedly Japanese in their adaptation, reflecting Shinto ideas, the spirit of Japan, solidarity among the weak, Japan as the leader of Asia, and the discovery of the samurai spirit. Japanese children, reading these Indonesian stories in Japanese, would have not only learned what is Japanese but also realized that the two nations belong to the same community. In this context, given that this community is defined as the “Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere,” “The Flower of Kusumo” can be described as a book that disseminated the South Seas, the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, and the Pacific War to Japanese children in the form of fairy tales.続きを見る
