The X-ray line profile of interstratified illite/montmorillonite has been investigated on the basis of the theory of KAKINOKI and KOMURA (1952) by the electric computer method. In interstratified illi...te/montmorillonite, two systems of interstratified structure\ have been recognized, which are distinguished by the different component layers. One is 1/M system and the other is II/IM system. The component layer of the 1/M system is defined by the single layer of illite (I) or montmorillonite (M). On the other hand, the component layer of the II/IM system consists of the double layer of illite (I) and/or montmonllomte (M), i.e., II and IM.
