Recently territorial development is attracting worldwide research attention and its social aspect is becoming a heart of interest for those who are working on this issue. The more practitioners establ...ish practices and the more info-centric society evolves, we must inevitably confront with an urgent issue: how can we derive meaningful knowledge out of the overflow of practices? In order to answer to this inquiry, the authors work on the literatures of Landscape Urbanism, Social Innovation and Urban Social Geography. Each of these discourses is currently being developed by western scholars. The aim of this paper is to develop a theoretical framework to approach to practices in territories under shrinking context in consideration to the reality of shrinking rural Japan where society is being suffered from deprivation caused by intensive urban migration and serious aging population. To this point, relational innovation across multiple spatial levels and needs satisfaction mechanism suggested in these literatures seem to be keys to trigger an alternative mode of development process, which is socially emancipating and sustainable. Authors define such process as ”Social Territorial Process”and identified following 5 essential factors through careful reading:Plural reuse of leftover local and territorial assets; Establishing multi-scalar social relations; Interplay of inclusive framework and process oriented development; Regeneration of cultural diversity and emancipation of humanity in everyday life settings; Rethinking Urban Rural partnership. Finally, the paper integrates these 5 factors with the theory of community development approach employed from Social Innovation literatures and develops a theoretical framework in order for this framework to help researchers to analyze territorial development practices realized in shrinking rural areas.続きを見る
