Severities of rice stem-rot caused by Helminthosporium and chemical contents of the lower parts of stems were compared within culms whose leaf blades had been cut off at five different growth stages: tillering, stem elongation, head initiation, 10 days before earing and earing stage. Stem-rot was severe when leaf blades were cut at about earing stage and 10 days before earing.
