概要 Baker (English, U. of Texas at Austin) considers the significance of water in British Romantic poetry and ideas about culture in works by Wordsworth, Coleridge, Southey, Byron, and Arnold. He argues t...at while the British navy was establishing dominance over the ocean during the Napoleonic Wars, British poets and thinkers established a modern idea of culture by framing their ideas of human life within the common experience of the sea, and that British culture was heavily influenced by its maritime situation. Focusing on the period from the 1790s to the mid-nineteenth century, especially the period known as William Wordsworth's "great decade," he shows how these poets invented the modern idea of culture and used the term "culture" in works like "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," The Excursion, the 1816 Thanksgiving Ode, On the Constitution of Church and State, The Prelude, the Lyrical Ballads, "The Scholar-Gipsy," The Liberal Imagination, and others. He does not examine in detail works by Anna Laetitia Barbauld, William Blake, Felicia Hemans, Percy Shelley, or novelists of the time.
