Abstract This paper argues about Masakazu Y amazaki's thoughts on 'Eisei,' which literally means'eternal life.'Yamazaki is a dramatist and critic who has been pursuing ways of life and relations between indi-v...iduals and communities in post-industrial society for over 40 years.
According to Yamazaki there are two types of society in modern times. One is industrial society and the other is post-industrial. Each society is accompanied by a character of the self which is suitable to his own society. The self suitable to an industrial society is 'the self for production,'which is divided because of the characters of this society, where most people make much of efficient system of produc-tion and strive to accumulate wealth and capital for the future.
The self which is suitable to a post-industrial society is'the self for consumption.' This type of self has two functions. One is to assimilate the self of his own to that of others, and the other function is to assimilate the self at present to that in the future. It is necessary for people who live in a post-industrial society to enjoy art, especially the drama in order to acquire'the self for consumption,'because even in a post-industrial society'the self for production'is still alive. Playing the drama makes human beings to assimilate the self of their own to that of others at present and in the future so as to live'real history. 、Eisdis a conception of such a way of life in a post-industrial society and can be regarded as an anti-dote to modern nihilism.
