A Comparative Analysis of Intermediate Comprehensive Textbooks Available in Japan and China : With Special Reference to Pragmatic Competence Training

Abstract The aim of this study is to formulate a method of teaching pragmatic competence, with a particular focus on the development of teaching material. With this purpose in mind., I will analyze Japanese la...nguage textbooks written in Japan and in China to verify whether they meet the standards set by the Department of Education concerning the training of pragmatic competence and also to identify the issuees they may possibly have while searching for ways to solve them. Specifically, I select five different comprehensive Japanese language textbooks, some of which are written in Japan and some in China, and compare how the concepts of “style”, #speech acts” and “positive politeness strategy” (all of which can be said to reflect pragmatic competence) are presented in them. As a result, the comparison shows that, when compared to textbooks written in Japan, the Chinese ones make less mention of the functions that the concepts listed above serve in discourse. This shows that there is not enough consideration for the functional aspect in their teaching method and by the structual ayllabus, which stress accumulating sentence patterns. There is a need to compile textbooks which would include elements relevant to pragmatic competence and to develop a type of teaching material which would not rely depend on the method of imitaing the textbook provided model.show more
