Abstract When we talk about our language used in communication, we need a metalanguage. In logic and linguistics, metalanguage is a technical tool used to talk about the object of study, i.e. linguistic expres...sions, or object language. Metalanguage also plays an important role in our everyday communication. When we make comments on our own or other's speech, we are using a metalanguage, as in "What you said doesn't make sense," or, "You speak too fast." Moreover, metalanguage plays an important role in the organization and management of discourse. Meta-l£ngu£st£c expressions such as conjunctions and prefaced expressions are used to organize discourse and manage conversation, thus helping our communication. Especially in debating, which often requires explicit signposting as well as refutation and rebuttal, effective use of metalanguage is essential. This paper focuses on a special group of meta-linguistic expressions, connective expressions, which are used by Japanese speakers who engage in debating and should be studied by learners of Japanese. The analysis of Japanese debaters'transcripts identified five functions of connective expressions : (1) using another form to restate, (2) modifying the previous statement, (3) explaining by example, (4) supporting the previous statement, and (5) signaling discourse organization.show more
