Abstract This paper is a data-based analysis to show the actual use of the sentence final particles, janaika and janaino. The result shows that there is little difference between the ways men and women use the...se particles, although both Japanese native speakers and non-native speakers believe that janaino is women's language, whereas janaino is men's language.
A detailed research reveals that these particles are used in both informal and formal occasions and that the particle janaino has developed into a more neutralized expression and has been used not only by women but by men. In contrast, the particle janaika is used neither by women nor by men and has been on the decline.
