A New Insight on the Sakuraya's Image of Masaaki UTUNOMIYA of Chikuzen Kurosaki : A reassessment about the formation process based on Zo-Ju-Goi UTSUNOMIYA MASAAKI-O Shoden

| Abstract | Masaaki UTSUNOMIYA has been referenced in dictionary-style books such as the Kokusihi Dai Jiten (BIG Japanese History Dictionary) and Meiji Isin Jinmei Jiten (Dictionary of People of the Meiji Revolut...ion) , but these are based on the edited document Zo-Ju-Goi UTSUNOMIYA MASAAKI-0 Shoden which is known to contain many mistakes. In this article I deal with the composition process of this document and analyze the text in order traditional image of Emperor Loyalism took shape and determine what would have to clarify why the been his real image. The UTSUNOMIYA MASAAKI-0 Shoden was written by Masaaki's grandchild Tomoaki, based on the Ko UTSUNOMIY A MASAAKI-0 Shoden with a rank promotion in view. The later document was corrected in 1915 by Nichinan FUKUMOTO, a Fukuoka born journalist and politician of the Meiji-Taisho period, and was iater presented as a scholarly report in 1924. To build an image based on the UTSUNOMIY A MASAAKI-0 Shoden doesn't make sense at all. At the same time, the popular Em-peror Loyalism spread by the UTSUNOMIYA MASAAKI-0 Shoden was also a coming out of the paper was granted. In a document of Gotoyama written by the Koki HIROTA in 1939 we find that a statue of UTSUNOMIY A MASAAKI-0 was erected. HIROTA a former Prime Minister from Fukuoka. In the memorial text of the monument we find a poem written by a famous Loyalist, Sanetomi SANJO, on the occasion of support to his group by Masaaki. Besides his prominent role in Sakuraya, Masaaki was also a ship businessman. He set up business with the Simazu Clan using the name of Satumaya Nieman. Summing up, the biggest achievement of Masaaki was probably his long work as an official in the Kurosaki Syuku. The real image of Masaaki is one of local capable businessman, official and, leader of the Kurosaki areas.show more |
