The View of Wartime Top Leaders and War Criminals through the Local Media : The Case of Nobusuke Kishi

| Abstract | This paper considers how local people saw the wartime top leaders and the war criminals immediately just after the Asia-Pacific War. It especially focuses on Nobusuke Kishi by analyzing the media cove...rage centering on Bocho Shinbun published in Yamaguchi Prefecture which was Kishi's hometown and his election district as well. Kishi served out as the Prime Minister from 1957 to 1960. He assumed the posts of a minister and a vice-minister during the war. After he was arrested as one of the suspects of class-A war criminals after the war, he was taken into custody and spent about three years in Sugamo Prison. This study concentrates on the period between August 1945 at the time of the end of the war and 28 April 1953, when he returned to the political world. This paper is divided into two parts. In the first half, by consulting Bocho Shinbun which was the biggest newspaper published in Yamaguchi Prefecture the paper gleans information about the image of wartime top leaders and suspects of war criminals was backed up. This paper then analyzes the arguments about wartime top leaders and suspects of war criminals developed in Antenna which was a correspondence column of this newspaper. In the latter half, this paper highlights Kishi, examining the image of Kishi from 1945 through 1960 reflected in other local press and surveys, the interviews conducted by the author. This paper concludes that there was no article, as far as I examined, which referred to Kishi as "war criminal" at the time of the election,. as far as I examined. The image of Kishi as "war criminal" was projected after 1960 since when "Anpo Toso" was getting more escalated all over Japan. It can be presumed that the image of Kishi as "war criminal" had been built up after he came back to the political stage.show more |
