An Alternative Conception of Multicultural World: From a Perspective of Liberal Nationalism

| Abstract | It is very difficult to point out what is "liberalism" concisely. However, according to the minimum definition, what liberalism pursues is a social-political principle which allows people with various... conceptions of good and values to co-exist in a society. Recently, the interpretation of liberalism has been challenged and changed by a new understanding of it, which is called "liberal-communitarian debate" and other theoretical disputes in the 1980's. With the change of the interpretation of liberalism, a conception of multicultural world must be changed. In this article, focusing on the change of the understanding of liberalism, I want to clarify the followings. First of all, about the theoretical position of liberal nationalism, which I am focusing on in this essay, one of the differences between the understanding of traditional liberalism and liberal nationalism originates in the difference how to interpret the enlightenment. Traditional liberalism is mainly relied on the continental interpretation of the enlightenment, but liberal nationalism is influenced by the British one, which main advocators of liberal nationalism would not refer so much. Secondly, a conception of multicultural would founded by liberal nationalism is not so-called "live-together" model, which various people and groups live together sharing with a common public social-political structure. Rather than that, a conception which liberal nationalists suggest would be as it were "habit-segregation" model, that is, various people and groups live in different social-political structures which are constructed by their own distinct political culture ("social culture" and respect the autonomy of each political arrangement.show more |
