Abstract In this article, the biography and the war's records of KURODA Josui are analyzed. KURODA Josui is a person who won the battle in Ishigakibaru (now Beppu city, in Oita prefecture) and participated in ...the battles that took place in Kyushu. On behalf of TOKUGAWA Ieyasu, KURODA Nagamasa, the son of Josui, joined the Eastern army and fought desperately against the Western army ISHIDA Mitsunari downward in Sekigahara. The KURODA family became the feudal lord of Chikuzen. For further information on this War in Ishigakibaru, please refer to the volume I of this article.
"The Records of War in Ishigakibaru," which is introduced in this article, depends numerous remarkable anecdotes. It illustrates Josui's ambition to conquer the whole country. Also Josui was highly praised by TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi.
The record was written to praise the achievements of the KURODA family. The achievements were that father (Josui) and his son (Nagamasa) participated in the important battle such as Sekigahara Battle, and including the war in Ishigakibaru in September, 1600 (Kricho 5). The KURODA family became the feudal lord of Chikuzen with 520,000 revenues in koku. However, the historical materials foreshadow that the war in September, 1600 (Keicho 5), which allowed the TOKUGAWA to conquer the country, could also have been an opportunity for the KURODA family to conquer the country instead of the TOKUGAWA family. Thus, comparing the various biographies and the war's records give different perspectives on history.
The historical materials may conduct as an appropriate tool for studying literature and ideologies not that of history. But there are descriptions that we rarely encounter in studying history. Therefore studying biographies and war's records might have great possibilities to understand history.
