Abstract In 1913·14 Anesaki Masaharu(1873·1949), a professor at Tokyo Imperial University, gave a lecture titled "Schools of Religious and Philosophical Thought in Japan" at Harvard University. T. S. Eliot (18...88-1965) attended the lecture as a student and wrote down its contents as "Notes on Eastern Philosophy." From the lecture, Eliot learned about the strong will of Nichiren (1222-82), the founder of the Nichiren Sect of Buddhism. This motivated Eliot go to Germany and England to study philosophy. Anesaki considered Japan-US collaboration important, and helped students such as Eliot to understand Japanese religion and how it is closely connected with Indian and Chinese religions.show more
