| Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the perceived motivational climate of junior high school pupils in physical education classes on their achievement motivation. This study exam...ined the following two hypotheses derived from previous research. 1) Mastery climate, which is assumed to relate to an adaptive motivation, would influence the motivational aspects of the achievement motivation, although it would not influence the avoidance aspects. 2) Performance climate, which is assumed to relate to an inadaptive motivation, would influence the avoidance aspects of the achievement motivation, although it would not influence the enthusiasm aspects. The results showed that although the mastery climate had significant positive effects on the motivational aspects of the achievement motivation, it had negative effects on the avoidance aspects. Further, in most cases, the performance climate had significant negative effects on the motivational aspects and positive effects on the avoidance aspects. However, results also showed that the “competitive orientation among students” factor -one of the performance climate factors- had a significant positive effect on the motivational aspects of the achievement motivation. These results suggested that achievement motivation in physical education could be promoted by not only mastery climate but also performance climate. In other words, although the findings on mastery climate supported previous research, the findings on performance climate were partly inconsistent with previous research.show more
