Abstract Unlike monumental architecture, vernacular architecture such as houses and shops have not been evaluated very much in their role in cultural history, but these are potentially very important in the un...derstanding of the culture, and in generating pride of native culture. The objective of this paper is to get information of a key to dating vernacular architecture in the British Period in developing countries in Asia by collating documents suggesting structure history with chronological method using iron/steel parts. The subjects of this time are structures in the British Period in Sydney, Melbourne and Geelong because there are more documents about historical architecture than other former British colonies in Asia. It is suggested to narrow the width of the year of manufacture of iron/steel parts by making a comparison between inscriptions of company names of iron/steel parts and transition of company names listed in directories.show more
