| Abstract |
This paper suggests case studies of social participatory education for minority students, especially Black and Hispanic students in New York City. These case studies have held since 2000, which will g...ive us specific strategies how we can empower children's motivation for social participation. Many minority students lost their confidence for low test marks, because standardized tests tell them their low achievement; and then they cannot assert their ability and obtain dreams and future to improve their situation or society. I introduced two case studies and discussed their roles and possibilities for minority students. First, this case showed us the possibilities of mutual recognition between different groups. In this project teachers let students decide a theme what they want to indicate, and also class works how they want to proceed. Teachers never expect an academic theme or skills on students' works; however, they evaluate students' attitudes for the purpose to rise up their sense to be a good labor. A significant point is that teachers never push their values and norms to students. The next process is writing which describe their harsh situation, students are required to understand their situation and express them. And in the final, students send them to "white middle class students" who live in different side of city where they've never seen before. After the exchange, most white students realized different views from minority students. Those phenomena give minority students the sense of acceptance and confidence from the mutual recognition. Second, next case stands on the perspective of exploring the possibilities of popular culture 'Hip-Hop'. Especially, immigrant students who depart from the mother land and culture or black students who derive from the ancestor of slave, impose to extinction of their original culture and history. Hip-Hop has the origin in Africa, and used to play a role of inheritance of ethnic history. A public high school in inner city has tried to encourage minority students from the works which students make poems and sing them on Hip-Hop. Students make videos and books that collected their pieces of originality. Many students realized their own values and same feelings as a minority group who lost hope. Nowadays, from the expansion of globalization we need to be more sensitive to the world of discouraged culture and groups, and promote their self-esteem and confidence from those effective strategies. After all they would regain a motivation of voluntary social participation. In conclusion, I argued the necessity of these works for social participatory for minority students, instead of the evaluation by test score.show more
