概要 | In Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, distinctive hand clapping sounds not found anywhere else can be heard during the practice of monastic debate. When a question is raised, the questioning monk makes a s...trong sound by holding out his left hand and clapping his right hand vigorously against it. Then the answering monk sitting on the floor turns to the questioner to give an immediate response. The questioner strategically and menacingly makes clapping sounds in order to win the debate. To an outside observer, these handclaps appear to be offensive and express negative emotions, in contrast to applause which expresses joy or praise. This paper examines the reality and the meaning of the act of clapping in Tibetan monastic debate from the perspective of the negative expression mechanism of clapping. After introducing references to the act of clapping in monastic debate by practicing monks and Tibetan Buddhist scholars, a video analysis of clapping is used to examine the specific gestures and types of clapping that are used. Next, the aggression and negative emotional responses to monastic debate clapping are examined based on interviews. Finally, how monastic debate clapping should be understood and positioned in the context of the various other acts of clapping is discussed.続きを見る |
