Hand clapping is an act of expressing joy and praise. However, the sound produced by clapping can also be a noise and interfere with smooth communication. For that reason, hand clapping can also rarely express negative emotions such as anger, pain, sadness, and resentment. In China, hand clapping as a negative emotional response exists to date. The hand clapping in this sense in China is a distinct phenomenon from that of other countries including Japan. In the thirteen kinds of kanji notation that mean the act of clapping in Chinese literature, the both palms are rarely hit as a negative emotional reaction. The purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics and appreciation of hand clapping as negative emotional reaction in China from ancient times to the present day.
