概要 | At the beginning of Matter and Memory, Henri Bergson remarks that this study affirms the reality of spirit and the reality of matter. He tries to determine the relation of these two by way of a precis...e example: memory. This statement implies a view that would overcome the formal realism and idealism presented about matter, and also would overcome the dualism that general theories of the relation of spirit and matter assume. But Bergson's memory that provides us a key to interpretation of the relation of spirit and matter does not mean simple remembrances composed of psychical states. In other words, Bergson's memory is not an assembly of remembrances consisting of daily experiences or the personal events of individuals. Therefore, I think two points need to be considered. First, we are going to specify exactly what Bergson means by the concept of memory. Second, we are going to see how he comes to unite the reality of spirit and matter only in memory. We shall also see how body as matter is defined as a kind of memory by considering the idea of "pure perception" in Matter and Memory.続きを見る |
