概要 The Paleogene formations developed in the Omuta district along the east coast of the Ariake Sea, Middle Kyushu are famous not only as the name of the Miike Coal-field, but also for their abundance in ...yielding molluscan fossils. This paper is dealt with the geological outline of these Paleogene formations with a geological map, and stratigraphic occurrence of mega-fossils from them with some illustrations too. The Paleogene formations in the Miike Coal-field consist of three groups, the Akasaki, Omuta and Manda Groups in ascending order. The Akasaki Group composed of the Ginsui Formation is characterized by the presence of the reddish purple beds. The similar beds are well known as the basal member of the Paleogene formations in the west to northwest Kyushu. The Omuta Group is featured by including the coal-bearing formations and is divided into three formations, the Komenoyama, Touka and Nanaura Formations in ascending order. The Komenoyama Formation yields abundant molluscan fossils. A few molluscan fossils are also collected from the Touka and Nanaura Formations. This group is mainly characterized by occurrence of Pseudoliva japonica and Colpospira (Acutospira) okadai. The Manda Group is composed of mostly marine deposits and is divided into two formations, the Kattachi and Yotsuyama Formations in ascending order. It yields abundant gastropod and bivalve fossils accompanied by some accessory elements, including cephalopods, brachiopods, echinoids, decapods, plants etc. The molluscan fauna of the Manda Group is characterized by Venericardia (Venericor) nipponica and V. (V.) mandaica is clearly different from that of the Omuta Group. The latter is correlated with the Lower Eocene [the Colpospira (Acutospira) okadai zone of the Takashima Stage] of the Amakusa-kamishima, a little to the south of the Ariake Sea. The former, on the other hand, is correlated with the Middle Eocene (Okinoshima Stage) of the Nagasaki district, the West and Northwest Kyushu. This paper also discusses some problems on stratigraphy, basin development and geological structure of the formations of Miike Coal-field. Paleontological discussion on the Paleogene fossils from the Miike coal-field will appear in the near future続きを見る
