During September 29 and October 26, 2002, I was dispatched as a short-term expect of soil science to Hanoi Agticultural Univercity, Ha Noi, Viet Nam, where the JICA project-type technical cooperation of "Education and Research Capability Building Project of Hanoi Agricultural University" was exected. In the present article, activities as an expert in the field of soil science were summarised. In addition, daily life in and around Hanoi, sight-seeing to the Ha Long Bay, and excursion to Sa Pa, Lao Cai province, to survey land use and agricultural production in the hilly and mountainous region of Viet Nam were discribed. The "Education and Research Capability Building Project of Hanoi Agricultural University" started in Septemver 1, 1998 and successfully terminated in August 31, 2003 with the duration of 5 years. I have participated in the project through joining the terms of the preliminary survey, long-term survey and mid-term evwluation before dispatch as a short-term expect. The project purpose was to improve quarity of research and education at three faculties(Faculty of Agronomy, Faculty of Land and Water Resources Management, and Faculty of Economics and Rural Development) of Hanoi Agricultural University. This was the first JICA project in which combined cooperation of natural and social sciences were carried out, and the cooperation was practiced by the Faculty of Agriculture and the Institute of Tropical Agriculture, kyushu University, with making consortium with the Faculty of Agriculture of Yamaguchi, Saga, Miyazaki, Kagoshima and Ryukyu universities. The project activity in the Faculty of Agronomy and the Faculty of Land and Water Resources Management of Hanoi Agricultural University is followed as a cooperative research work financially supporetd by a P&P fund of Kyushu University.
