| 概要 | This paper is a report on the field work that we conducted under the theme “a practical study on media art development of Sbek Thom, the traditional Cambodian shadow theater" in Cambodia in 2005. The ...subject of traditional Cambodian performing arts is extremely intriguing; hence, we will create music-based media art with elements of the traditional Cambodian performing arts. For this purpose, if possible, we expect to collaborate with Cambodian artists. The field work was conducted in Cambodia because of the importance of acquiring a deeper knowledge of traditional Cambodian performing arts and promoting an active interchange between Cambodian and Japanese artist. We visited and investigated the music, dance, and shadow theater of the Apsara Arts Association, which is an educational organization for traditional Cambodian dance and music; the Sovanna Phum, which is a traditional shadow theater presentation organization; and the Ty Chean company, which is a traditional shadow theater organization that presents Sbek Thom. The investigation comprised interviews with the directors and individual performers of each organization, photography and video recordings of the performances, as well as the collection of documents pertaining to the traditional Cambodian performing arts. Based on the knowledge gained from the field work, this paper provides descriptions regarding each organization and the musical instruments used in the traditional Cambodian performing arts. We will pursue a more detailed study based on 白is investigation in the future.
