概要 This paper discusses the structure and interpretation of the Japanese correlative construction, as illustrated in (1). (1) [P Kireina dansaa ga odoru] hodo [Q butai ga hanayakani naru] beautiful dance...r nom dance HODO stage nom gorgeous be. The Japanese correlative construction is interpreted as "an element within the clause preceding hodo (henceforth P) that is directly proportional to the clause following hodo (henceforth Q)". It is worth noting that the construction in (1) may have ambiguous interpretations. For example, (1) has the following two interpretations: (i) the more beautiful dancers dance, the more gorgeous the stage is, (ii) the longer beautiful dancers dance, the more gorgeous the stage is. Ishii (2008) proposes that hodo chooses a scale syntactically to yield an interpretation of the Japanese correlative construction. The proposal based on a scale, however, is insufficient to account for the ambiguity. In contrast to Ishii (2008), this paper proposes that hodo syntactically chooses an object which is measured by a scale, and that the scale is determined pragmatically. This proposal can account for the ambiguity of the construction.続きを見る
