概要 In these two years, I made some tours of Kyushu, gathering the examples of texture stamped potteries. I could here report more than two hundred pieces discovered on 40 sites. I owe much of this articl...e to many friends and collectors who helped my survey.
As I pointed out in the previous article (vol. 84), there are four kinds of stamps, but now I shall call them as "textural stamp otteries" for only my convenience. I thought these textures were used for the materials to seperate the potteries clay from the mould like of a basket work. As these stamped potteries were made by means of such moulding, the stamped marks are not decorative patterns.
There are two styles in the latest stage of Jyomon (or proto Yayoi) potteries. One is refined made, the surface polished, and the other is rough made, stripped by shell ridge. Now I can add the third style, the texture stamped ones. These stamped potteries are supposed for cooking vessels, as their shape is simple and they were heated repeatedly. Many examples of texture stamped ones are discovered in Kyushu except north-eastern district (Fukuoka and Oita prefectures). This distribution may suggest that the moulding method of pottery was introduced from some other countries byond the sea. But this suggestion can not be proved, as far as any examples in neighbouring countries are staying in darkness. In prehistoric Japan, especially on the earliest epock of Yayoi, or the latest of Jyomon, I have been more interested in the origin of woven cloth itself, than that of such moulding method.
