In supporting hikikomori (social withdrawal), family approach is essential. This literature review aimed at investigating research trends and issues related to family intervention with hikikomori family member in Japan. We searched for literature using keywords "hikikomori" and "family". The electronic database search found twelve relevant studies. We found that 1) family intervention studies identified in this literature review were conducted on the basis of wide range of theoretical or methodological backgrounds, 2) focusing on and dealing with relationships between child (hikikomori family member) and his/her parents, 3) including actual opportunity of practice such as group role-play session or homework. Regarding research issues, we argued 1) very few studies utilized quantitative approach, 2) assessment of relationships between child and his/her parents was insufficient, and 3) difficulties in assessment of hikikomori cases due to limited information from his/her parents. From the perspective of these research issues, further studies are warranted to establish various alternatives in supporting family with hikikomori family member.
