概要 In recent years, the number of English-medium program is increasing in Japanese universities. The students do not need to learn Japanese as they earn a degree only in classes taught in English. In tur...n, they have less information and supports provided by Japanese, making adaptation to daily life difficult. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the mental health status of undergraduate students in English-medium program in Japanese university. Sixty-nine international students (IS) completed the following self-reported questionnaires: the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Kassler10 (K10), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Sense of coherence (SOC). We compared the result to the Japanese students’ data collected by our previous study as local students (LS). Seventy per cent of the international students estimated their own Japanese language skills as poor. The ratio of students with depressive symptoms (CES-D score 16) was higher in IS (47.8%) than in LS (29.9%). The CES-D score was significantly higher in IS (17.7±10.0) than in LS (12.6±8.2), and was close to the score of students with suicidal ideation in previous study. K10 score was higher in IS (10.7±7.0) than in LS (8.6±7.1), while there was no significant difference among the two groups. Results show that the international students have poorer mental health and need more support for their mental health than local students in Japan. In application, the support should be to improve their stress coping and sleep quality as they had lower SOC and higher PSQI, It would also be effective to help them learn Japanese so that they can communicate with Japanese and other international students, considered their low estimation of Japanese skill.続きを見る
