概要 The purpose of this study is twofold. First, this study investigates what English expressions are used where the “unmarked” potential expressions are used in Japanese. Second, this paper aims to deter...mine whether the usage tendency of English potential expressions is closer to Japanese or Chinese from the viewpoint of whether potential markers are used or not. In addition, the purposes of this study mentioned above have been discussed with regards to the four different kinds of “unmarked” potential sentences classified by Chi (2014) in terms of meaning, such as: “the Realization of Intention”, “the Realization of Expectation”,“ the Ability of the Human Beings” and“ the Attribute of the Inanimate Objects”. Using parallelly translated novels, the results show that, on the whole, in English both “unmarked” potential expressions (“can/could V”, “would V”, etc.) and marked potential expressions (“don’t V”, “never/ever V”) are used while “unmarked”potential expressions are natural in Japanese and marked potential expressions are natural in Chinese. What is more, through the data collected in this investigation and the ideas mentioned in previous studies (Kageyama, 1998; Honda, 2014;etc.), it is inferred that the possibility of the use of the “unmarked” potential expressions in English is different according to the meaning of“ unmarked” potential sentences. In the “unmarked” potential sentences of “the Realization of Intention”, “the Realization of Expectation” or “the Ability of the Human Beings”, it is more preferable to use marked potential expressions in English, as would occur in Chinese. On the other hand, in the “unmarked” potential sentences of“ the Attribute of the Inanimate Objects”, English resembles Japanese in using“ unmarked” potential expressions.続きを見る
