概要 In the era of Goryeo Dynasty, the publication of the preceding dynasty’s history had to rely on existing records that included ancient documents (e.g. history books and literature) and history books f...rom China. Among them, contents of Chinese books-which were recorded from foreigners’ views-were used in a notably selective way even after Samguksaki (The Chronicles of the Three States) and Samgukyusa (The Heritage of the Three States) were published. Meanwhile, ancient documents are more subjective in nature as they contained what our ancestors meant to recollect and record. As such, they are far more valuable than the Chinese books in understanding our ancestors’ thoughts and sentiments.
However, while these ancient documents were passed down to the Goryeo Dynasty, the agents of memory were often segregated from the objects of memory-historical sites and relics-or the objects were obliterated, which made it very hard to pass down memories in many cases. For instance, the lord of Ansi City was a war hero of Goguryeo, who led the war with Tang Dynasty to a victory. However, as Goguryeo was destroyed by Tang Dynasty, the related records would have been intentionally destroyed and people were forced not to recollect them, so that the lord would not emerge as a symbolic figure of Korean people’s national identity. Evidently, when an agent or an object of memory disappears, the record cannot be maintained for long. This needs to be ‘remembered’ in reading Samguksaki or Samgukyusa.
