1. Investigations on the behaviour pattern of the founding females of Polistes chinensis antennalis Perez were carried out under natural conditions from the end of April to the beginning of May, 1957. During this period the nest produced no larvae. The behaviour pattern of the founding female was analysed by a system as shown in Table 3. 2. During this period most o f the times spent by the founding female were occupied by the nest construction (behaviour supporting the maintenance of her brood) and going out from her nest (behaviour supporting the existence of herself). In many cases the behaviour which requires comparatively a longer time at the beginning of a day's active life was the nest construction. The construction behaviour of the nest took place periodically, and very often the oviposition followed each of such behaviour within a short time. In the day when the oviposition occurred, the construction behaviour of the nest was very active. On the contrary, the construction behaviour of the nest was seldom observed or observed very shortly on the day when the female laid no eggs. Change of the behaviour pattern occurred between the nest construction and going out from the nest after the oviposition in the afternoon. Namely, after the oviposition especially in the afternoon, the founding female showed the strong tendency of going out from her nest for comparatively a long time. 3. The fact that the daily rhythm of the behaviour pattern of each founding female before the hatching period of her brood takes the similar type in connection with the oviposition resembles the chain of the behaviour pattern seen in the solitary wasps. In Polistes the analysis of the behaviour pattern suggests the existence of an inherent chain of behaviour which seems to be evoked by some internal releasing factors.
