Characteristics of agricultural population, land use, and production of rice, wheat, and maize were analyzed for the selected 14 countries of central and southwestern Asia based on the FAO agricultural statistics. The low proportion of agricultural population to the total population and of cultivated land to the total land, and the great variation in the situation of the production of cereals among the 14 countries were generally understood. Wheat is a main cereal crop in the 14 countries, but it was found that the yield of wheat considerably varied with years and with countries. Due to unawareness of the countries in central and southwestern Asia, however, agro-ecological and socio-economic factors or reasons responsible to the above analytical results were not well clarified.
