概要 | Confirmation requests are often made in conversation. Generally speaking, they are made in the form of questioning. However, there are some cases in which they perform the act of “teasing.” This paper... focuses on the confirmation requests prefaced with the Japanese conjunction “ja”, and investigates how the utterance can be recognized as “teasing” by using the method of conversation analysis. The following results can be revealed. Firstly, when a tease is recognizable, the purpose of the confirmation request is not to request the confirmation of the preceding utterance but to cause other participants’ laughter. Secondly, when a speaker performs the act of teasing with the confirmation request, s/he ordinarily holds a doubt on the preceding utterance. This is consistent with Drew’s (1987) theory that “teasing” is completed through another speaker expressing a skeptical attitude towards that assertion in the next turn, in which the preceding speaker is felt overdoing. Additionally, in an exceptional case, teasing can also be achieved by producing “laughable” thing through targeting the turn of the preceding speaker.続きを見る |
